SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, July 29, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Gov. Gary Herbert has issued a statement after the passing of former Utah First Lady Norma Matheson, who died Sunday night at the age of 89 after a battle with leukemia.
Norma Matheson, formerly Warenski, was the wife of Scott Milne Matheson Jr., who served as the 12th Governor of Utah from 1977 to 1985, according to Wikipedia. He is the most recent Democrat to serve in that position. Scott Matheson died in October 1990.
Herbert issued the following statement on the passing of Norma Matheson:
“Jeanette and I were saddened to hear of Norma Matheson’s passing. Norma was a tremendous example of impassioned leadership. She was the perfect teammate for her husband, former Governor Scott Matheson. Energetic and intelligent, she led causes that changed Utah’s future for the better. She raised a family that is dedicated to public service. I’m so grateful to have known Norma. She was a tremendous mother, advocate, and person. The entire Matheson family is in our prayers at this time.”
The Mathesons first met at East High School, and dated for six years before marrying, according to Wikipedia.
The Mathesons have four children, three sons and a daughter. Their son Jim served as a United States Representative from Utah from 2001 to 2015. He represented Utah’s 2nd district from 2001 to 2013 and its 4th district from 2013 to 2015. Their son Scott is a United States Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. He has served on that court since 2010.
