1 dead, 2 airlifted to hospital after head-on crash in Tooele; traffic backed up for miles

TOOELE, Utah, Sept. 27, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — One person is dead after a head-on collision in Tooele on Thursday afternoon. Two others have been airlifted to an area hospital.

The accident happened mid-afternoon when a red Jeep Liberty, southbound on State Route 36 near mile marker 66, crossed into northbound lanes, striking a Honda Civic head on, according to preliminary information from the Utah Highway Patrol.

“The driver of the Honda, who was the sole occupant, suffered fatal injuries from the accident,” the news release says. “There were two occupants in the Jeep who were taken by helicopter to the hospital. The condition of those occupants is unknown.”

The writer of the statement did not know the genders of those involved in the crash.

Traffic is blocked on SR-36 and on nearby Interstate 80. As of 6 p.m., cars were lined up for miles in both directions from Exit 99, and had been for hours.
