WEST JORDAN, Utah, Jan. 30, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A 20-year-old nanny has been charged with child abuse after her employer turned over surveillance video that reportedly showed her hurting 5-month-old twins in West Jordan.

McKenna Newell, of West Valley City, turned herself in overnight. She was booked into jail on suspicion of two charges of child abuse — inflicting serious physical injury on a child, and inflicting serious injury intentionally, a second-degree felony. Newell is being held on bail of $750,000.

A probable cause statement filed by a sergeant of the West Jordan Police Department says that on Jan. 5 of this year, the father of identical twin girls viewed footage that was recorded while he and the babies’ mother were at work.

A short time after the video begins, both babies can be seen crying while on the floor, the statement says.

“The defendant is seen throwing blankets on both children,” the statement said. The blanket covered one of baby’s faces, and her cries became muffled. “She struggled to get the blanket off and appeared to be frantically kicking.”

The defendant, Newell, can be seen removing the blanket, then picking up the infant whose face was covered and placing her in a rocker/bassinet, the statement says. When the child continued to cry, “the defendant aggressively shook the rocker/bassinet.”

The video then shows Newell picking up the baby and calming her, then putting her back on the floor next to her twin, the statement says.

The first baby began to cry again, and ” the defendant kicked one child in the rib/leg area several times,” the statement says. The defendant then picked her up and sat her on the couch aggressively, causing her head to bounce forward.” The defendant also kicked the second child “several times as she lay on the floor.”

Newell then picked up the second twin and placed her on her lap along with her sister. The defendant is then seen covering their nose and mouth areas with her hand.

“The statement of the defendant (is) that she is the person in the video,” the probable cause says. “The defendant stated that she was frustrated and did not know what to do. The defendant stated she did not remember doing the things in the video, and that she felt embarrassed.”
