YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, July 4, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — One person was killed and a National Park Service ranger was injured in an officer-involved shooting early Thursday in Yellowstone National Park.

The National Park Service reported “a significant law enforcement incident at Canyon Village in the central part of Yellowstone National Park overnight and [Thursday] morning.”

Park rangers responded to a report of an armed person making threats, NPS said in a news release.

“When rangers contacted the individual, there was an exchange of gunfire between the subject and law enforcement rangers,” the release says. “The subject is deceased.”

No other information about the person involved was immediately released.

One park ranger was injured in the exchange of gunfire, according to NPS.

“They are in stable condition and being treated at a nearby regional hospital,” the release says.

Park officials say there are no active threats to the public.

The area around the Canyon Lodge complex is closed while officials investigate the shooting. The FBI is leading the investigation, with support from NPS special agents.

Gephardt Daily will update this story as more information becomes available.
