TAYLORSVILLE, Utah, June 16, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Two suspects are in custody Friday night, and two more are being sought, after police responded to a “shots fired” call that turned out to be a home invasion robbery.

One of two adult women in the home was pistol-whipped.

Lt. Robertson, of the Unified Police Department, said the call of shots fired came in at about 11 p.m. As officers were heading to the area, near 4100 West and 6500 South, a second call was received, this one reporting a home invasion robbery.

“Several units were coming into the area, and a couple of officers spotted what we think are two possible suspects,” Robertson said.

In fact, an officer had pulled around the corner just as the two suspects were returning to their vehicle. When the officer gave commands for them to stop, they fled on foot.

Robertson said one suspect was caught almost immediately, and the other was apprehended just a few minutes later.

Officers with the West Jordan Police Department assisted UPD in setting up a containment area, and they had detained a possible third suspect who would be interviewed by detectives. Robertson praised the West Jordan officers, saying, “They did a great job.”

Police recovered two rifles and two handguns used in the incident, plus several items indicating that the two suspects in custody were involved in the crime.

The suspects were dressed in dark clothing, and a couple wore masks and gloves, which are among the items police recovered.

Robertson said officials haven’t yet confirmed whether shots were actually fired, or if the sound of the glass breaking on a sliding door during the home invasion was mistaken for gunfire.

The victim who was pistol-whipped had minor injuries, Robertson said, but will be OK.

“Violent Crimes Unit detectives are coming out now to follow-up in the investigation,” he said. “They’ll determine who was involved and the motive. They’ll be determining why (the suspects) targeted this house.”

It’s possible the incident is gang-related, he said, because “some of the individuals have been involved in previous gang incidents.”
