Police: Driver fatally injured while fleeing officers during Ogden traffic stop

OGDEN, Utah, March 29, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Ogden Police and emergency crews were at the scene of a fatal crash Friday night at 23rd Street and Wall Avenue.

Lt. Tyler Hanson, Ogden Police Department, told Gephardt Daily the incident began at just before 7 p.m. with a traffic stop at 21st Street and Lincoln Avenue.

The officer made contact with the driver, Hanson said, but the driver fled, dragging the officer a short distance. The officer sustained minor injuries.

The suspect fled at a high rate of speed, a subsequent OPD news release states, causing the vehicle to go out of control and crash into a light pole at 23rd and Wall.

The driver died on scene. Police are not releasing his name until they have a positive identification and next of kin has been notified.

Utah Highway Patrol is handling the investigation.
