SARATOGA SPRINGS, Utah, March 30, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A Midvale man died at the scene after his vehicle hit a power pole in Saratoga Springs Thursday night.

The man, whose name has not been released pending notification of next of kin, was driving east on Pony Express Parkway at about 10:45 p.m. when his car veered left, off the roadway at Thunder Boulevard (200 West).

“Witnesses said he was going at a very high rate of speed, in excess of 80 mph,” Sgt. Roger Williams, Saratago Springs Police Department, said at the scene.

“As they continued down the road, they saw a bright flash of light behind them, which apparently was the power line sparking after he hit the pole. They turned around, found the crash, called us.”

Williams said the car hit the power pole head on.

“Both airbags deployed,” he said. “The vehicle continued and hit some concrete barriers that were out there in the field. It appears the driver was not wearing a seatbelt, and he was deceased here at the scene.”

Life-saving measures were attempted by police and fire department officials, Williams said, and LifeFlight was called to the scene, and landed, but was dismissed after it was determined the man could not be saved.

Early evidence did not suggest distracted or impaired driving, Williams said, but the investigation is ongoing.

Williams said it appears the man was not wearing a seatbelt, but said he was not sure a seatbelt could have saved him due to the severity of the impact with the power pole, then the concrete barriers.

Power crews worked through the night to restore electricity by morning.
