SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah, Oct. 27, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A Sunday semi truck rollover that happened at about 7:10 a.m. continued to block westbound Interstate 80 until about 2:50 p.m.
The westbound truck hit a cement barrier, rolled, and burst into flames.
“It’s a large effort, trying to move it out of the roadway,” Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Michael Gordon told Gephardt Daily at about 2 p.m., prior to the reopening. “Sometimes you have to take pieces and sections of it off one at a time. There are tow companies trying to work on moving it, piece by piece. It’s giving them some issues.”
Gordon said troopers are trying to figure out what initially caused the driver to leave the roadway.
The two adults in the semi were transported to an area hospital for treatments believed to be non-life-threatening, Gordon said.
Unified Fire responded to the scene and doused the flames.
“The fire is out, however HazMat crews remain on scene for cleanup,” the agency wrote in a social media post Sunday morning. “Quick response from crews allowed for rapid patient care and fire extinguishment.”
The incident happened near mile marker 131.
