LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON, Utah, Feb. 24, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Little Cottonwood Canyon has reopened after a second avalanche Friday morning, according to the Utah Department of Transportation.

The second avalanche happened on State Route 210 a little after 11 a.m. when crews were doing avalanche control, UDOT said in a tweet.

Due to an avalanche just before 6 p.m. Thursday, the eastbound lanes of SR-210 were closed and the westbound lanes also closed at 7 p.m.

Unified Fire Authority Public Information Officer Eric Holmes told Gephardt Daily the avalanche danger was extremely high.

Avalanche control efforts included blasting Friday morning to bring down more of the snow, Holmes said, which then triggered the second avalanche.

Holmes said it is believed that four cars were initially involved in the tail end of the first slide, with one car completely buried and the others partially buried near Cliff Lodge at Snowbird Resort.

There were no injuries in either avalanche.

Little Cottonwood Canyon reopened at 8 a.m. and closed again just after 11 a.m. It reopened for the second time just after 4 p.m.
