SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Oct. 6, 2022 (Gephardt Daily) — Salt Lake City police are on the scene of a shooting that left a teenager injured Thursday night.
“We are investigating a shooting near Meadows Park,” the department said on its web site just after 7 p.m.
“One person, a teenager, has a non-life threatening gunshot injury. We have recovered a firearm. Members from our Gang Unit are on scene.”
One suspect is in custody, according to the press notices, and several different areas are part of the ongoing investigation.
At a press conference near the shooting scene Thursday night, Brent Weisberg, the department’s public information officer, said the identity of the second suspect is known to police.
Efforts are being made to reach the individual’s family, he said, to enlist them to convince the youth to come forward to police.
All three involved, the victim, the suspect in custody, and the suspect at large are juveniles under the age of 18.
The incident is believed to be gang-related, Weisberg said, involving a fight between two individuals where guns, plural, at least two, were brandished and at least one was fired.
The two suspects and people associated with them then fled the scene.
