LAYTON, Utah, Sept. 29, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Layton police have captured two suspects in the drug-house shooting of a man who died later in an Idaho hospital.

Angel Christopher Abreu, 22, was taken into custody and booked into the Davis County Jail on charges of criminal homicide, aggravated burglary, aggravated kidnapping and obstruction of justice. Information on a second suspect was not released because of his juvenile status.

“Layton detectives located and arrested Angel Abreu in Ogden late Friday night,” a Facebook post from the Layton City Police Department says. “After interviewing him, two guns and other items used in this crime were recovered.

“A 16-year-old male was identified as the second suspect, and he was arrested at a separate Ogden location early Saturday morning. Both have been booked for aggravated murder, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated burglary.”

A probable cause statement in the Abreu case says two people wearing sweatshirts and masks entered a Layton residence at about 5:35 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27.

Information previously released by the Layton City Police Department indicates the residence was a mobile home located in a park at 2500 N. Fort Lane.

“One of these two individuals possessed a rifle and the other possessed a hand gun,” the probable cause statement says. “Inside the residence, these two individuals ordered occupants of the home onto the floor at gunpoint.

“The individual with a rifle fired a round into the floor of the residence threatening that the next round would be into one of the people in the home if there was further noncompliance,” the statement says.

“It was during this time that an individual with the initials A.A.C. emerged from a back bedroom. When he was ordered by the individuals with the guns to get on the floor, he refused to comply, instead retreating back into the bedroom that he had just left. As A.A.C. was retreating, the individual with the rifle opened fire at him, firing 13 rounds, striking A.A.C. twice in the back.”

Information released by the Layton City Police Department indicates the man shot was 26-year-old Anthony Child.

“This incident was witnessed by at least four other individuals within the residence,” the court statement says. “A.A.C. later died of these two gunshot wounds.”

Two witnesses/victims identified the man wielding the rifle as Abreu, recognizing him by his voice and physique. One witness had met Abreu several weeks earlier, and the other had known him longer.

Child requested that two acquaintances drive him to a hospital in Preston, Idaho, according to Layton City Police information. Child died at the hospital from complications related to his gunshot wounds.

Police in Idaho contacted Layton officials, and officers went to the mobile home.

“When officers inspected the crime scene they observed 12 bullet holes in the
residence, one consistent with the warning shot described as occurring in the main living room and 11 others in the hallway and bedroom occupied by A.A.C.,” Abreu’s probable cause statement says.

“Prior to officers arriving at the scene, the residence had been cleaned up
considerably, including having 13 shell casings removed from the residence and areas of the residence where blood had fallen as a result of the shooting cleaned with hydrogen peroxide in an effort to destroy evidence.”

Information from Layton officials states that the mobile home was revealed to house a drug operation. A search revealed an active grow operation for illegal mushrooms, and laboratory equipment used to extract THC from marijuana, the LCPD statement says. Marijuana was stored in five buckets, totaling more than 50 gallons.

The shell casings were later recovered, the probable cause statement says.

In connection with the investigation, three local men were arrested and booked into the Davis County Jail, Layton officials have said. Probable cause statements are not yet available in their cases, so their exact involvement in the case is available through public documents.

Charges filed are known:

Kevin Content, 24, was booked on suspicion of obstruction of justice and possession of a controlled substance.

Devon Miller, 22, was booked on suspicion of obstruction of justice, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Douglas Cordova, 30, was booked on suspicion of endangerment of a child and possession of drug paraphernalia.
