PLEASANT GROVE, Utah, Feb. 7, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) ā Pleasant Grove police and the Utah County SWAT Team have taken a man into custody after he allegedly held his daughter at gunpoint in her family home Wednesday night.
The suspect is Nicholas William Haun, 38. He had lived out of state until showing up at the house a few months ago, police said. His wife, daughter and a son live at the residence, near 1050 East and 100 North.
Capt. Britt Smith, Pleasant Grove Police Department, said Thursday night that officials first descended on the scene after the daughter first called 911, “hysterical, very upset,” he said.
She and her father had been arguing through the evening, the woman said, then the argument escalated until he pulled a gun on her.
“HeĀ held her at gunpoint for some time,” Smith said. “She was able to get away from him, called 911. Officers responded up there, were able to get the daughter and the suspect’s wife, out of the house, but unfortunately the perpetrator was able to escape before we had a proper perimeter set up on the home.”
The neighborhood was put on shelter-in-place status until authorities were sure Haun had left the area.
Police followed leads, and learned later this morning that Haun might have returned to the residence. On the scene since about noon Thursday, police set up a perimeter, obtained a search warrant, and tonight called in Utah County’s SWAT Team, Smith said.
Because of Haun’s criminal history and the knowledge he had a gun, the SWAT Team set an explosive charge and blew open the door rather than knocking, Smith said. Haun, his wife and son were inside. The daughter who previously called 911 was not at the residence.
“HeĀ surrendered immediately to the SWAT team,” Smith said, of the takedown, which happened at about 7:15 p.m. Thursday. “He is in custody and will be booked into the Utah County Jail on aggravated assault charges.”
Haun is also wanted by law enforcement authorities in Arizona, an earlier news release said.
“We could not ask for a better resolution,” Smith said. “Everybody is safe. The neighborhood is safe. He is going to be held accountable for his actions. It’s a good ending.”
