LEEDS, Utah, June 13, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Utah Highway Patrol troopers are investigating a fatal crash on I-15 after a car collided with a horse early Thursday morning.

According to a statement by the UHP, the accident happened about 1:30 a.m. when the female driver of a northbound Hyundai Veloster struck a black horse near mile marker 21 outside Leeds in Washington County.

Investigators say the heavily damaged car proceeded up the highway about half a mile before coming to rest against a cable barrier.

Troopers say the driver of the car was killed on impact. Her name was being withheld pending notification of family members.

The horse also died at the scene.

Crash investigators were headed to the area after receiving reports of horses on the highway, but arrived too late to prevent the crash, according to the UHP.

Northbound I-15 was closed for hours but has since reopened.

Investigators have yet to determine where the horse came from.

Gephardt Daily will update the story as more information becomes available.
