SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Aug. 16, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A suspect is in custody after a woman was shot at a home directly across the street from Jackson Elementary School in Salt Lake City Tuesday.

The suspect, Luis Guerra-Perez, 31, was arrested without incident and the firearm was recovered, the Salt Lake City Police Department said in a news release Wednesday. Officers booked Guerra-Perez into jail for aggravated burglary and theft.

Police were called to the residence, at 757 W. 200 North, at about 3:25 p.m. When they arrived, they found a woman suffering significant blood loss from a gunshot wound to the leg.

The 46-year-old woman was inside her room when a stranger, later identified as Guerra-Perez entered, shot her one time and stole items before fleeing, the news release said. Officers arrived at the scene and administered first aid until fire personnel arrived.

Other responding officers located the suspect near 800 W. North Temple Street.

Detective Greg Wilking, spokesman for the Salt Lake City Police Department, said officers moved quickly to make the arrest and recovered the weapon believed used in the shooting from the front of a local drive-through restaurant.

Although Jackson Elementary was not in session Tuesday, a number of people were inside the facility when the shooting took place.

“This incident took place very quickly,” Wilking said, “and the people involved were taken into custody very quickly, so there wasn’t fear that it would spill over into that elementary.”

Neighbors told Gephardt Daily the home had been the site of trouble in the past, something police confirmed.
