Chevy Bolt beat Tesla Model 3 on charge range

The new Chevy Bolt has an estimated 238 miles per single battery charge, which beats Tesla's upcoming Model 3, that has an estimated 215 miles per charge. With a comparable price to Tesla's mass-market electric car, the competition could be good for consumers. Photo by Chevy

DETROIT, Sept. 15 (UPI) — The 2017 Chevy Bolt outlasts the upcoming Tesla Model 3 in how far drivers can go on a single charge, Chevy said this week.

The new Bolt is rated at 238 miles per charge compared to the Model 3’s expected 215 miles per charge. Chevy’s electric car has a comparable price and an earlier availability and could make for serious competition for Tesla.

The sticker price for the Bolt is expected to be about $37,500 when it reaches car lots this fall, in the same neighborhood as the Model 3, Tesla’s first car designed for the mass market. The Model 3 was expected to arrive as early as September, but is not likely to reach the public until some time in 2018.

A potentially tougher competition in the electric car market could be good for consumers.

The five-seat hatchback Bolt will likely move the needle for electric cars the way the Chevy Volt did for hybrids, analysts believe. Tesla, so far a luxury brand, is under pressure to meet expectations for the 400,000 pre-orders placed for the Model 3.

“Chevrolet showed the world the production version Bolt EV earlier this year and in a few short months we’ve moved from that vision to a reality,” GM North America President Alan Batey said in a statement. “The Bolt EV is a game changer for the electric car segment and it will start to become available at Chevrolet dealerships later this year.”

  1. This is garbage. You are basing the EPA based mpg for a car already in production against the announced ‘lowest’ limit for the new Tesla Model 3’s. We have no idea what mpg rating the EPA will give the Model 3 once it releases. But yes, let’s go ahead and make false proclamations with incorrect headlines. I agree the Chevy Bolt’s range is impressive, but your statement misleads the millions of people who are not closely following the electric vehicle market. Click bait, nothing less.

  2. Tesla said “…more than 215” miles range. Do you really think they will come out now with anything that is not “..more than 238” miles range?
