Baseball Card Goes For a Steal at $1.32M
WATCHUNG, N.J., April 27 (UPI) — A rare 1909 card of baseball great Honus Wagner sold at auction this weekend for a whopping $1.32 million, but it’s a far cry from what other examples of the card have fetched in the past.
The card was sold this weekend by Robert Edwards Auctions in New Jersey. It is one of what collectors say is only 200 Wagner cards made by American Tobaco Co. that year.
The auction house said the card is in excellent condition and likely thought it would sell for more than it did.
“This very attractive T206 Honus Wagner possesses virtually every quality highly desired by collectors. It has vibrant colors, a bright orange background, and a crisp, bold, and entirely flawless portrait,” the Robert Edwards Auctions website said.
In the past, the card has sold for a lot more — double at one time.
An anonymous buyer bought one for $2.8 million in 2007 and more recently, another fetched$2.1 million in 2013.
