NEW YORK, Jan. 7 (UPI) — New York foodies who find themselves with spare spending cash are being offered a particularly pricey pastry: a $100 doughnut covered in 24-karat gold flakes. The Manila Social Club, a Brooklyn eatery owned by Filipino brothers Bjorn De La Cruz and Samuel Ware, unveiled The Golden Cristal Ube Donut in an Instagram postthat gave the public a first look at the confection, as well as revealing its $100 price tag.De La Cruz, the doughnut’s creator, acknowledged the decadent dessert is a publicity ploy.”It is gimmicky, that is the thing. It’s supposed to get attention, obviously. It’s gold on a doughnut! Let’s not be coy about this,” he told WPIX-TV.

The doughnut contains ube, a purple yam found in several of The Manila Social Club’s dishes, as well as vintage Cristal, 24-karat edible gold flakes and gold dust.

“The honey notes from the Cristal pair well with the ube mousse,” Ware told the New York Daily News.

The brothers said they have sold more than five dozen of the doughnuts.
