Sierra-West jeweler Tim Branscomb says that his company sells Chocolate Diamonds because other companies’ advertisements got Branscomb’s customers to asking about the diamonds. They were asking what the diamonds were worth.

That’s right, the term Chocolate Diamond is not a long-time official jewelry name for a diamond, like yellow diamond or colorless diamond.

Chocolate Diamonds® are Le Vian’s proprietary brand of natural fancy color diamonds that are chosen for their rarity and chocolate flavor.

Le Vian® owns the international registration for the Chocolate Diamonds® trademark worldwide.

Le Vian® branded Chocolate Diamonds® in 2000 and achieved registration by 2008 and now enjoys worldwide trademark registration and rights.

We spoke to Bill Hansen, who is a jeweler at Jared®, he stated, “diamonds are a yellow color and some are treated with heat or lasers.”

When looking for brown diamonds, diamond searchers have to find larger crystals to be able to cut the stone out of it.

Diamonds are mainly a yellowish color and are just treated to bring out additional colors, such as a topaz, emerald, red and chocolate diamond.

A standard diamond has 52 facets (cuts) and jewelers have to cut them so if they have flaws, bubbles or dirt you can cut them to hide the imperfections.

“If you are looking at the brown diamonds of any color grade, they are on the lowest end of value,” said Hansen.

Here are the values for diamonds, from least to most:

  • Chocolate Diamonds - Gephardt DailyBlack
  • Green
  • Brown
  • Brown Yellow
  • Brown Pink
  • Transparent Yellow
  • Orange Tangerine
  • Pink
  • Blue
  • Red
  • Clear/ Colorless

Naming them Chocolate Diamonds® is just a way for companies to make more money selling brown diamonds.

Maybe you like the look of a brown or Chocolate Diamond®, but don’t let anyone tell you that just because it is brown that it has greater value. Because now you know that they don’t.
