But the furor subsided. And millions ran to the App Store to download the app, to keep the conversations going.

So should it be any surprise that the most-downloaded free iPhone app of the year is — Facebook Messenger?

Apple has released its annual look back at the year that was in App Land, and we’ve got the list here.

The company has 1.3 million apps available, and has seen over 85 billion total downloads since opening the App Store in 2010.

The majority of the top 10 iPhone apps are tried and true favorites:

No. 2 Snapchat. The app with the disappearing messages launched in 2011, and many thought it would be a fad. Instead, some 700 million photos are shared every day on Snapchat. That’s a lot of snaps!

No. 3: YouTube, the top video site in the world, reaching 1 billion people monthly.

No. 4: Facebook. The world’s largest social network, with 1.3 billion users.

No. 5: Instagram. Facebook’s photo sharing app is where some 60 million photos are shared daily.

No. 6: Free music with Pandora, home of the personalized radio station.

No. 7: Google Maps.

No. 8: A new entry, the Flipagram app, which launched in late 2013. The app turns your Facebook and Instagram photos into little video stories.

No. 9: Spotify, home to on-demand music. (Taylor Swift yanked her new “1989” album off Spotify this year, in a royalty dispute.)

No. 10: Another new entry, the mind-numbing numbers game, 2048. The game launched in March, and is similar to Threes, which Apple editors have deemed the best video game app of the year. Both games have groups of titles and numbers, which are moved around to achieve specific game winning combinations.
