MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif., Nov. 25 (UPI) — Firefighters intentionally set a turkey on fire at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar to raise awareness of safe cooking procedures for the holiday season.
.
During the demonstration held for U.S. Marines, firefighters from the Miramar Fire Department dropped an ice-cold turkey into an overfilled fryer, using the wrong type of oil and cooking at the wrong temperature. The aim was to show exactly what could go wrong if a turkey is cooked improperly.
.
“So we’re doing everything wrong here,” said John Meyer, the firefighter who led the demonstration. “We want you guys to see how badly things can go wrong just so that you can try and avoid this over the holiday season.”
.
A mannequin was placed next to the fryer to show the level of damage a person could sustain. Once the near-frozen turkey was dropped into the fryer, flames shot up within seconds, searing the mannequin in the process. The department shared video on Twitter.
.”We do this for the Marines because they face so many dangers on a daily basis,” Meyer added. “The worst thing that we think could happen to them is that they face another danger on Thanksgiving or during the holidays that could’ve been prevented.”
