Nov. 17 (UPI) — While Americans prepare for Thanksgiving, a new recall of ground turkey products may be linked to a nationwide salmonella outbreak.
On Thursday, Jennie-O Turkey Store in Barron, Wisc., announced a recall of approximately 91,388 pounds of raw ground turkey products. The recall might be linked to a wider outbreak of salmonella-linked illnesses in the U.S., the U.S. Department of Agriculture said. Salmonella has been identified in samples taken from raw turkey pet food, raw turkey products, and live turkeys, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in an investigation notice. As of Nov. 5, 164 people had been infected with the salmonella strain in 35 states. Sixty-three have been hospitalized and one person from California has died.
“The outbreak strain of Salmonella Reading is present in live turkeys and in many types of raw turkey products, indicating it might be widespread in the turkey industry,” the CDC said in an investigation notice Friday.
The CDC advises people not to eat recalled turkey and to carefully handle and cook any other raw turkey thoroughly to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent food poisoning.
