LAS VEGAS, Oct. 8 (UPI) — Sen. Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., filed a lawsuit against the three companies that manufacture the elastic TheraBand after an exercise incident rendered him blind in one eye.

Reid, 75, and attorney James Morgan filed the lawsuit in the Clark County District Court naming exercise companies Hygenic Intangible Property Holding Company, the Hygenic Corporation and Performace Health LLC as defendants.

Earlier this year, Reid spent New Year’s night in a hospital when he fell after a piece of equipment broke as he worked out in his home in Henderson, a Las Vegas suburb. He ended up with broken bones in his face and three cracked ribs.

“As a result of the TheraBand breaking or slipping out of his hand, Plaintiff Harry Reid has suffered and continues to suffer from severe pain and injuries including, but not limited to, loss of vision in his right eye, a concussion, broken orbital bones, severe disfigurement and bruising to his face, hand injuries, facial lacerations, scarring, and broken ribs,” the Las Vegas Law Blog reported.

Reid alleges the injury he sustained could affect his ability to secure employment. He seeks $50,000 in damages.

Reid also sustained an exercise injury in 2011, when he dislocated a shoulder and received a black eye while jogging in Washington. He returned to work quickly with his arm in a sling.

Reid plans to retire after his current term in the Senate ends in early 2017.
