LOS ANGELES – December 03, 2015 — (UPI) — Jennifer Garner has joined the cast of Wakefield.

The 43-year-old actress will play the wife of Bryan Cranston‘s character in the forthcoming drama. Wakefield is based on the E.L. Doctorow short story of the same name, which itself is inspired by the Nathaniel Hawthorne story.

The plot follows a married New York lawyer who retreats to his attic after suffering a nervous breakdown. The character only emerges to rummage through trash cans for food, and watches his family adjust to life without him.

Cranston was nearly unrecognizable when he was spotted on set Tuesday in Pasadena, Calif. He wore a disheveled wig with dirty clothes and ungroomed facial hair as he begged for food in a public park.

Garner last appeared in Danny Collins with Al Pacino, and is set to act in an adaptation of the Christy Beam book Three Miracles from Heaven: A Little Girl, Her Journey to Heaven, and Her Amazing Story of Healing.

Cranston last starred in Trumbo, which opened Nov. 25, and voices Titanium Rex in new Crackle series SuperMansion.
