Feb. 8 (UPI) — Chrissy Metz says she plans to lose weight on her own time and by her own methods.

The 36-year-old actress confirmed in the Feb. 20 issue of People that she’d like to shed some pounds, but denied she will have gastric bypass surgery.

“There have been so many discussions about my weight: ‘How is she going to lose weight? Is she going to lose weight? When is she going to lose weight?’ It’s kind of funny,” Metz said after sharing that she’s ruled out surgery at this time.

“I do want to lose weight,” she qualified. “I want to have a fit, healthy body and not have to be put in a box. I don’t want to be limited by anything.”

Speculation Metz will have gastric bypass surgery began in December after her “This is Us” character, Kate Pearson, considered the procedure on the NBC series. She addressed the possibility on The “Ellen DeGeneres Show” the same month.

“Like most actors, we are chameleons, so we play different roles. Like, Christian Bale lost all that weight for ‘The Machinist.’ So I was like, ‘I hope I get to lose weight because that’s like a win-win for me.’ But it wasn’t mandated,” the star explained.

“It is a fast fix and it’s not always the right answer,” she said of the surgery. “With the character, I think she wants a fast fix … We’ll get to see all the details.”

“This is Us” co-stars Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore and Sterling K. Brown, and airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET. Metz recently said in the March issue of Glamour that she had 81 cents in her bank account when she landed the role of Kate.
