SALT LAKE CITY, Oct. 28, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Opening today is “American Pastoral,” a film set against the tremulous backdrop of the late 1960s and the race riots that flared up in urban neighborhoods of New Jersey.
The film, based on Phillip Roth’s best-selling book, follows a seemingly ideal American family who work and live in the beautiful and rural countryside just outside of Newark. Former high school football star Seymour, his beautiful wife, Dawn, and their teenage daughter, Merry, lead a tranquil life.
As tension and political activism begin to brew, Merry begins to see that she has been protected from the outside world and wants to dive in with both feet. Her parents try to dissuade her, but Merry is headstrong and ultimately takes activism too far.
“American Pastoral” marks the directorial debut of Ewan McGregor, who also stars in the film as Seymour “Swede” Levov. Jennifer Connelly co-stars as his wife, Dawn, and Dakota Fanning plays Merry.
