Dr. Seuss Day: National Day of Reading Conflicts With Common Core Testing

On the second of March, 1904, one baby was born (well, probably more.).
Theodor Geisl may have just been a kid,
But when he got bigger,
Just look what he did!

“I’ll tell stories!” said Theo,
“Just see if I don’t.”
“I’ll write them in books,
“Some will read them, some won’t.”

But they all would learn lessons,
And things they could use,
From Theodor Geisel, A.K.A. . . . Dr. Seuss.

People celebrate this whimsical man’s day of birth,
And the impact he had in his time here on Earth.
Read Across America comes one day a year.
On the famed writer’s birthday,
And guess what? It’s here!

The National Education Association makes plans.
To get lots of books into boys’ and girls’ hands.
Libraries, schools, and community centers,
Are there to share knowledge with each child who enters.
The NEA proudly declares this occasion
The largest reading observance each year in the nation.

But this year, some kids won’t be joining the fests.
Instead they’ll be taking their Common Core tests.
Illinois, New Jersey, and at least one other state,
Say this great day of reading will just have to wait.
But in Cleveland, Ohio, they still honor Seuss Day,
(They’ll starting testing instead, tomorrow, on Tuesday.).

Oh The Places You’ll Go, if you learn how to read,
And knowledge is something you’ll certainly need.
Some are reading, some are testing,
Some are making a stink.
But the good Doctor always enjoyed a good think.
Whichever your child is engaged in today,
A think is a think, and that’s the Dr. Seuss way.
