TORONTO, Sept. 14 (UPI) — Actress Ellen Page and girlfriend Samantha Thomas made their red carpet debut Sunday, for the premiere of her new film Freeheld.
“I’m in love,” Page told E! News when asked why she decided to bring along Thomas. “Walking down the carpet holding my girlfriend’s hand is pretty special.”
The couple were seen wearing matching tuxedo ensembles while Page rocked tight black pants and a skinny tie.
Page’s close friend, model Ruby Rose also attended the event posing with the couple for some Instagram selfies. Rose later complimented Page on the social media site exclaiming “When your best friend is the most talented, funny, beautiful, generous, humble human being it’s hard to not smile until it hurts. Ellen, I am so proud of you and will always be grateful for everything you are and will always be to me.”
Freeheld which premiered during the Toronto International Film Festival stars Julianne Moore as real-life police officer Laurel Hester, with Page as her domestic partner, Stacie Andree.
The film is based on the 2007 documentary of the same name, which was inspired by Hester’s fight against the Ocean County, New Jersey Board of Chosen Freeholders. The veteran detective was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in 2005, and sought to pass her pension benefits on to Andree.
Freeheld is directed by Peter Sollett (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist), and opens in theaters Oct. 2.
