LOS ANGELES, April 27 (UPI) — Ellen Pompeo is excited for Meredith Grey’s future on Grey’s Anatomy.

The 45-year-old actress opened up about her character following Patrick Shepherd’s (Patrick Dempsey) death on last week’s episode. Grey and Shepherd, nicknamed McDreamy by viewers, wed in season seven, and the doctor’s unexpected demise rocked fans of the ABC series.

“There are so many people out there who have suffered tremendous loss and tragedy,” Pompeo tweeted Monday. “Husbands and wives of soldiers, victims of senseless violence and parents who have lost children. People who get up each day and do what feels like is the impossible.”

“So it it for these people and in the spirit of resilance I am honored And excited to tell the story of how Meredith goes on in the face of what feels like the impossible,” she shared. “I hope you will all join me on her journey.”

Pompeo has portrayed Grey since the show’s premiere in 2005, and seen the character through several other tragedies. Dempsey’s departure was particularly shocking for fans because the actor was under contract through season 12. Season 11 airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET.
