Best known as Lt. Uhura from the original “Star Trek” series and subsequent six films, Nichelle Nichols isn’t just an actress, she’s a living legend. Uhura was one of the first African American women on television portrayed as something other than a servant, and when was considering leaving the show, Martin Luther King, Jr. himself asked her to stay because of the positive impact she made in American culture.

“NASA came to me and asked me to assist them recruiting the first women and minorities in the astronaut corps, and I took off almost a year of my career and found them the best that there were,” she said. “They were so pleased with me I got a plaque.”
