LAS VEGAS, May 23 (UPI) — Idina Menzel supports giving Elsa a girlfriend in “Frozen 2.”

The 44-year-old actress, who voiced the character in “Frozen” (2013), weighed in on the potential plot line after the fan-led #GiveElsaAGirlfriend campaign went viral on social media this month.

“I think it’s great that she’s stirring it up,” Menzel told Entertainment Tonight at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday. “Disney’s just got to contend with that. I’ll let them figure that out. [I’ll embrace it] no matter what.”

#GiveElsaAGirlfriend calls for Elsa to have a female love interest in the forthcoming “Frozen” sequel. Supporters hope the story would add to the increasing number of depictions of the LGBT community in the media.

“Frozen” was a smash success, earning over $1.2 billion at the box office and winning Best Animated Feature at the 2014 Academy Awards. The film also produced the hit song “Let It Go,” which won Best Original Song at the Oscars.

“I’m very proud [Elsa connects with the LGBT community],” Menzel previously told the Big Issue. “[Fans have] hidden something or felt that they’ve had to compromise who they are in order to be accepted. They finally decide to throw caution to the wind.”

“I love that [in the characters I play] there’s a pattern of young people trying to find their way,” she added. “The older I get the more I still need to be reminded of my own self-esteem and my own empowerment as a woman.”

“Frozen” co-starred Kristen Bell as Elsa’s sister Anna and Josh Gad as the snowman Olaf. The sequel has yet to announce a release date, although Menzel, Bell and Gad will return for a “Frozen” television special in 2017.
