LOS ANGELES, May 24 (UPI) — Earth is under attack in 20th Century Fox’s extended trailer for their upcoming alien invasion sequel, “Independence Day: Resurgence.”

The close to five minute sneak-peek released Monday highlights how scientist David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) has been harnessing alien technology from the first film, 1996’s “Independence Day,” in order to fight off another potential alien attack.

The clip introduces fans to a new generation of characters including Jake Morrison (Liam Hemsworth), a U.S. fighter pilot, Patricia Whitmore (Maika Monroe), former first daughter to President Thomas J. Whitmore from the original film (Bill Pullman) and Jessie Usher, the stepson and fighter pilot of Steven Hiller, a character originally portrayed by Will Smith who is now dead due to the actor not returning for the sequel.

“We convinced an entire generation that this is a battle that we can win. We sacrificed for each other, no matter what the cost. And that’s worth fighting for,” Pullman’s character says in the trailer as cities around the world are leveled and destroyed

Other returning stars include Vivica A. Fox, Judd Hirsch and Brent Spiner along with newcomer Sela Ward as the President of the United States.

“We always knew they were coming back. After “Independence Day” redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global catastrophe on an unimaginable scale,” read’s the film’s official synopsis.

“Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defence program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.”

Directed by Roland Emmerich, “Independence Day: Resurgence” invades theaters June 23.
