The series, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman who play Holmes and Watson, is based on the stories written of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Fans are excited about the upcoming ‘special’ because it is a departure show which finds our heroes in 1890s London, the original setting where Doyle set his stories. Series producers have already confirmed the upcoming special,“Sherlock: The Abominable Bride,”  will ‘stand alone’ from the highly anticipated fourth season.

“The special is its own thing,” Steven Moffat said in a recent interview, “We wouldn’t have done the story we’re doing, and the way we’re doing it, if we didn’t have this special. It’s not part of the run of three episodes.”

“Sherlock” is produced by Hartswood Films for BBC One and co-produced by Masterpiece.

“The Abominable Bride” will premiere at 9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 1, 2016 on “Masterpiece Mystery!” on PBS and online at pbs.org/masterpiece. Check your local PBS station for the time it airs in your area.
