March 3 (UPI) — Working mom Katie Holmes says she strives to give her daughter a “stable” upbringing.

The 38-year-old actress discussed the importance of being a “present” and involved mom to Suri, her 10-year-old daughter with ex-husband Tom Cruise, in the April issue of Town & Country.

“My child is the most important person to me, and her upbringing is paramount to my work right now,” Holmes told the magazine. “It’s very important that I’m present and she has a stable, innocent childhood. I feel so blessed to do what I do, but there’s nothing in the world better than watching your child succeed.”

“Every day, kids get a little further away from you,” she explained. “That’s a positive thing. They should be becoming more independent, but it’s heartbreaking.”

“You want them to stay with you forever, but they’re these amazing beings, and you have to do everything you can to give them what they need — and then they’re going to go. And that’s going to be very, very sad for me,” the star confessed.

Holmes split from Cruise in 2012 after five years of marriage, and has since been linked to actor Jamie Foxx. She told Entertainment Tonight in October that Suri inspired her directorial debut, All We Had, which opened in December.

“She gets a special thanks for everything, [for] every job I do, because she makes every day great and awesome and better,” the actress gushed. “I know myself better because of her.”

Holmes will reprise Jacqueline Kennedy in the Reelz miniseries The Kennedys: After Camelot, which premieres April 2. She shared her regard for the late first lady in the Town & Country interview.

“She was so graceful, even when she was scared or sad. I really admire her protection of the Kennedy name, her husband, and how much she wanted her children to be as grounded and normal and successful on their own as possible,” she said.
