BEIJING, June 29 (UPI) — After a 20-minute meeting with the exiled Dalai Lama this week, Lady Gaga has reportedly been banned from China.
She has reportedly been added to a long list of foreigners banned by the Communist party after news reached Beijing that she had met with the Dalai Lama during the 84th Annual Meeting of the United States Conference of Mayors in Indianapolis, The Guardian reported. The topics of that discussion included kindness, yoga and compassion.
Gaga, who has sold more than 27 million albums and has a huge fan base in China, joins the list that includes Maroon 5, Bjork and Oasis.
“We hope that people from the international community can be fully aware of his true colors and nature,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei said Monday. “The purpose of his visits and activities in other countries is just to promote his proposal for Tibetan independence.”
China’s Communist party regards the Dalai Lama as a dangerous politico set on seeing Tibet separated from the rest of China, Hollywood Reporter reported. The Dalai Lama, however, has said his focus is on “a middle way” which would give Tibet greater political autonomy rather than full independence.
