June 1 (UPI) — Amazon Studios released the trailer for the documentary “Mary J. Blige’s My Life” on Tuesday. The film premieres June 25 on Amazon Prime.
“My Life” was Blige’s second album, released in 1994. Blige sung about abuse, addiction and depression. The triple platinum album won the Billboard Music Award for Top R&B album and received a Grammy nomination for Best R&B album.
For the album’s 25th anniversary, filmmaker Vanessa Roth captured Blige performing the album live for the first time. Blige also discusses the specific details that inspired the songs. She says the New York housing projects in which she lived felt like a prison.
“Most of the times, I was just depressed and didn’t want to live,” Blige says. “I had it all inside and I was able to sing it and write it. I didn’t know so many people felt the same way.”
Sean Combs, who produced “My Life” on his Bad Boy Entertainment label, also speaks in the film. Combs is also an executive producer of the film. Taraji P. Henson is featured in the film discussing the impact “My Life” made on the Black community by opening up conversations about mental health.
Blige executive produced the film. Quincy Jones executive produced the music.
Blige currently stars on Starz’s drama “Power Book II: Ghost” and will next appear in the Aretha Franklin biopic “Respect.”
