Jan. 31 (UPI) — Mischa Barton says a date rape drug was behind her recent hospitalization.

The 31-year-old actress said in an interview with People that she was hospitalized Jan. 26 after she was drugged with GHB at her 31st birthday party the night previous.

“On the evening of the 25th, I went out with a group of friends to celebrate my birthday. While having drinks, I realized that something was not right as my behavior was becoming erratic and continued to intensify over the next several hours,” Barton said.

“I voluntarily went to get professional help, and I was informed by their staff that I had been given GHB. After an overnight stay, I am home and doing well,” she added. “This is a lesson to all young women out there, be aware of your surroundings.”

TMZ had reported last week that Barton was voluntarily transported to the hospital after police responded to a disturbance call at her home. The actress was seen rambling and hanging over her backyard fence in a dress shirt.

“She was making incoherent statements that made absolutely no sense and she was transported to the hospital,” law enforcement said at the time.

Barton is best known for playing Marissa Cooper on “The O.C.,” and has since appeared on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and “Recovery Road.” She thanked fans for their support Monday on Twitter.

“Thank you so much for all the love guys. It means the world to me. There is too much going on in the world so I appreciate this more than ever,” she wrote. “From the bottom of my heart. We shall over come.”
