Jan. 25 (UPI) — Paris Jackson says “self-hatred” led her to attempt suicide at age 15.
“It was just self-hatred,” Jackson explained of the attempt. “Low self-esteem, thinking that I couldn’t do anything right, not thinking I was worthy of living anymore.”
“[I previously tried] multiple times,” she admitted. “It was just once that it became public.”
Jackson slashed her wrist and downed 20 Motrin pills in 2013 amid a battle with depression and a drug addiction. The attempt followed her sexual assault at 14, which she talked about for the first time in the interview.
“[It was a much older] complete stranger,” the star said. “I don’t wanna give too many details. But it was not a good experience at all, and it was really hard for me, and at the time, I didn’t tell anybody.”
Jackson told the magazine she started to improve after transferring to a therapeutic school in Utah. She said dad Michael Jackson also struggled with depression and that she was prescribed the same antidepressants he once took.
“It was great for me,” the star said of the school. “I’m a completely different person.”
“[Before] I was crazy. I was actually crazy. I was going through a lot of, like, teen angst. And I was also dealing with my depression and my anxiety without any help,” she shared.
Jackson, who has more than 50 tattoos, said in June that some of her pieces help cover self-harm “scars and past of self-hatred.” The teenager reportedly landed a modeling gig with Chanel this month, and was spotted shooting in Paris last week.
