LOS ANGELES, Feb. 16 (UPI) — Pee-wee’s Big Holiday released a first trailer starring Paul Reubens on Tuesday.

The 63-year-old actor returns as Pee-wee Herman in the preview, which sees the character leave his comfortable routine behind for an adventure.

Joe Manganiello co-stars as a mysterious stranger who kickstarts Pee-wee’s journey, with appearances by Tara Buck, Stephanie Beatriz and Alia Shawkat.

Pee-wee’s Big Holiday will premiere March 18 on Netflix. Inside Amy Schumer director John Lee helmed the film, with Reubens and Judd Apatow as co-executive producers.

Reubens first played Pee-wee on the stage in The Pee-wee Herman Show in the early 1980s, and went on to star in the 1985 feature film Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure. The character also inspired the CBS series Pee-wee’s Playhouse, which aired from 1986 to 1990.

“When I was younger, I didn’t put my finger on why I liked Pee-wee so much — it just made me laugh,” Apatow recently told The New York Times. “But looking back, it’s a group of strange people who are having a great time and being really nice to each other, and as a slightly weird kid I must have understood that.”

“I liked watching someone so different whom the audience loved,” the Trainwreck director added. “The idea that unique people were getting applause, that the crowd was going crazy for Pee-wee, made me feel you didn’t have to be the football team quarterback.”

Reubens has since voiced characters on several animated series, including Batman: The Brave and the Bold and TRON: Uprising and played Mr. Vargas on The Blacklist. He also guest starred on Pushing Daisies and Portlandia.
