Run The Jewels release message of hope with surprise new track

El-P and Killer Mike, better known as the hip hop duo Run The Jewels, surprised fans with a new song they decided to release ahead of their new album, and the day after Donald Trump was elected president, because it "seems to fit." WASHINGTON, Nov. 10 (UPI) — At some point in the near future, hip hop duo Run The Jewels will release its highly anticipated third album. With the results of Tuesday’s presidential election, RDJ thought the world could use something new now.

Run The Jewels released a new track, “2100,” on Wednesday in an effort to soothe the nerves of people in the United States who are worried by the election of Donald Trump as president.

Considering the protests started even before the race was called for Trump — people gathered in front of the White House and students crowded the streets in California — El-P and Killer Mike could have the right idea about soothing people’s souls.

On Soundcloud, where the new track was posted, the duo wrote, “for our friends. for our family. for everyone who is hurting or scared right now. here is a song we wrote months ago. we weren’t planning on releasing it yet but… well it feels right, now. its about fear and its about love and its about wanting more for all of us. its called 2100. we hope it finds you well.”

El-P tweeted after the song was posted that it isn’t actually a response to the election, considering it was written months ago for Run The Jewels 3, which does not yet have a release date but has already been promoted heavily.

“We didn’t write this song about the election,” the producer and rapper said on Twitter. “We wrote it about something bigger and we wrote it several months ago. Seems to fit though.”

we didnt write this song about the election. we wrote it about something bigger and we wrote it several months ago. seems to fit though.

It seems a stretch to say the song isn’t about the election. The first lyric, delivered by Killer Mike, is, “How long before the hate that we hold lead us to another Holocaust?”

While both MC’s rap about overcoming difficulties in life, a lot of the lyrics sound at least somewhat referential to the debates that have dominated the country during the year-and-a-half-long presidential election.

Killer Mike has spent much of the last year talking about actual issues, in addition to Run The Jewels explosion in popularity after their flawless second album, Run The Jewels 2.

His appearances on political and social talk shows continued Wednesday morning with an appearance on The Real, sharing his thoughts on why Trump won the presidency — arguably for the second time since the election he’s done so, if you count “2100.”
