LOS ANGELES, Aug. 31 (UPI) — Shannen Doherty is giving fans a glimpse into her ongoing battle with cancer.
The 45-year-old actress, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, shared a pair of candid photos documenting “the many faces of cancer” Tuesday on Instagram.
“There are many faces to cancer. This is one of them. Chemo Day with @kurtiswarienko by my side,” she captioned a picture of husband Kurt Iswarienko kissing her forehead.
“The many faces of cancer. Chemo Day. What we call the Red Devil being injected into me via the port that’s in my chest. Dawn is my nurse who takes excellent care of me,” she added to another shot.
Doherty had announced this month that her cancer has spread and that she will be undergoing chemotherapy and radiation. Director Kevin Smith, who cast Doherty in his film “Mallrats” and the sequel series “MallBrats,” praised the actress’ bravery in an interview Tuesday.
“I get really emotional about Shannen,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “The only reason I got to make [Mallrats] … was because Shannen Doherty, who was coming off of 90210, super heat on her, said yes to doing the flick.”
“I’m in awe of anybody’s strength when they have to face the unknown,” the director added. “You appreciate the genius of somebody who’s facing the unfaceable with absolute grace and good humor, and you’re like, ‘You’re my [expletive] hero.'”
Doherty is known for playing Brenda Walsh on “Beverly Hills, 90210” and Prue Halliwell on “Charmed.” She will reprise Rene in “MallBrats” and is also slated for the movie “Undateable John” with Darryl Hannah.
