ANCHORAGE, AK, March 3, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Sig Hansen, the star of the reality TV series “Deadliest Catch” suffered a heart attack while filming the show.
Hansen, 49, was filming an episode of the Discovery Channel show when he collapsed and fell unconscious. He was airlifted to an Alaska hospital, where he’s currently in recovery.
The producers of the show wrote this message to concerned fans on the official “Deadliest Catch” Facebook Page. The post reads:
“Hey Catch Crew – We know there have been a lot of questions about Sig today. But we wanted to make sure we had as much information for you as possible before sharing. Captain Sig Hansen experienced chest pain at sea during the taping of “Deadliest Catch.” While Sig was determined to keep going, the crew acted swiftly and insisted that they dock to get him help.
He was airlifted to Anchorage, Alaska, and immediately rushed to a medical facility. He is with his family and in good spirits. Please send him your love and prayers!”
“Deadliest Catch“ premiered on Discovery in 2002, with Hansen serving as a star and technical adviser on the show since it began.
According to Yahoo.com, back in August, Tony Lara, another captain who had appeared on the show, died of an apparent heart attack while attending the annual motorcycle rally in Sturgis, South Dakota. He was 50.
Lara was a crabbing veteran who joined the cast of “Deadliest Catch” several years ago, following the 2010 death of Phil Harris, who died of a stroke at age 53.
Like Harris, Lara served as captain of the Cornelia Marie, working with Phil’s son Josh in commercial crab fishing out of Kodiak, Alaska.
