LONDON – OCTOBER 5, 2015 — (UPI) — Simon Cowell apologized to fans for his outburst on Sunday’s episode of The X-Factor U.K.

The 55-year-old X-Factor creator and judge offered amends on Twitter, writing, “Sorry for swearing on the show tonight. It’s not big and it’s not clever. Wish Karen Mav had kept a seat … Yes I did apologise to my contestants.”

Cowell shocked viewers by swearing and sulking after being assigned the Overs for the six-chair challenge. The over-25 contestants were crestfallen as their new mentor demanded of the hosts, “Are you winding me up? Are you sure this is the right paper in there?”

The television personality was previously assigned the Overs in season 11, and coached Ben Haenow to victory. Rita Ora will mentor the Girls in season 12, with Nick Grimshaw to lead the Boys and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini to coach the Groups.

Cowell is known for his blunt and brusque critiques, but is considered an adept talent scout. He has appeared as a judge on and executive produced several reality competitions, including American Idol and America’s Got Talent, in addition to The X-Factor.
