NEW YORK, Sept. 17 (UPI) — The 16th century-set, musical-comedy “Something Rotten!” is set to close Jan. 1 after 742 performances at the St. James Theatre, producers announced.

The show was directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw, with music and lyrics by Wayne Kirkpatrick and Karey Kirkpatrick, and a book by Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell.

A national tour of the production will officially begin Jan. 17 at The Boston Opera House.

“On behalf of all the producers, we are so grateful to an exceptional company and crew for a wonderful run,” producer Kevin McCollum said in a statement Friday. “It has been rewarding to have the opportunity to bring this completely original musical to the stage with Casey Nicholaw’s vision and to introduce new voices in the musical theater with Karey Kirkpatrick, John O’Farrell and Wayne Kirkpatrick. And we are thrilled to announce our campaign to make America laugh again with our national tour.”

Something Rotten! stars Rob McClure as Nick Bottom, Will Chase as William Shakespeare, Josh Grisetti as Nigel Bottom, Leslie Kritzer as Bea, Brad Oscar as Nostradamus, Catherine Brunell as Portia, David Beach as Brother Jeremiah, Edward Hibbert as Lord Clapham/Master of the Justice, Gerry Vichi as Shylock, and André Ward as Minstrel.

“Brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play, but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as ‘The Bard,'” a synopsis said. “When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theater involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical! But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self… and all that jazz.

“With its heart on its ruffled sleeve and sequins in its soul, Something Rotten! is an uproarious dose of pure Broadway fun and an irresistible ode to musicals — those dazzling creations that entertain us, inspire us, and remind us that everything’s better with an exclamation point!”
