WASHINGTON D.C., Dec. 31, 2015 (UPI) — The United States Postal Service released the designs of its 2016 postage stamps this week, which include four Star Trek stamps on bright-color backgrounds, and stamps showing new photos of the planet Pluto.
Published Wednesday, the collection also includes stamps honoring child movie star Shirley Temple, African-American activist Richard Allen, Eid holiday greetings and full-color photos of other planets in the Solar System.
“Our stamps articulate the American experience through miniature works of art,” Acting Stamp Services Director Mary-Anne Penner said in a statement. “Our diverse stamp topics for 2016 are sure to appeal to everyone.”
The Star Trek Forever stamps include four pop-art designs honoring the Starship Enterprise and other thematic elements including the Vulcan salute and the transporter for the show’s 50th anniversary. They were reportedly created by Heads of State under art director Antonio Alcala’s supervision.
The new stamps come as Star Trek copyright holders CBS and Paramount Pictures sue independent filmmakers over the development of a feature-length fan-film that allegedly uses Star Trek themes, characters and other creative aspects without permission.
