SALT LAKE CITY, Dec. 30, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Three new films open in theaters this week, but they will have little effect on what “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” will take home.
Box Office Mojo is predicting another weekend at the top for the new Star Wars film, estimating a $59.6 million haul. The film has shattered records since it opened in theaters Dec. 16 taking in a worldwide haul of $653.8 million.
“20th Century Women” is not expected to break the Top 10 as it is being released in a very limited run. The film is expected to earn about $50 thousand until it gets a wider release January 20th.
“Fences” will fare a little better as it opens in a little more than 2,000 theaters. The film, directed by Denzel Washington, is predicted to earn $10.7 million, placing it in sixth place.
“Hidden Figures,” starring Octavia Spencer and Taraji P. Henson, has opened in limited release and will not make the top 10 list until it goes wide Jan. 6. “Hidden Figures” has earned $1.2 million domestically.

20th Century Women
Starring: Annette Bening, Elle Fanning and Greta Gerwig
Rated R
This is the story of three women who explore love and freedom in Southern California during the late 1970s.
“20th Century Women” is a character study of three women as they begin to help a teenage boy into adulthood.
The film uses both dramatic and humorous moments to convey its message about the awkwardness of love and discovering one’s true self.
“20th Century Women” is a lovely film about coming of age. It gets a B and is rated R.
Fences
Starring: Denzel Washington and Viola Davis
Rated PG-13
“Fences,” which is based on the Tony Award-winning Broadway play, is a beautifully acted and paced film about a man who is coming to terms with his life choices and responsibilities to his family.
His stubborn and unchanging ideals coupled with the failures in his youth hold him back as he blames the white man for his lot in life. This attitude makes him refuse to believe his son can succeed where he could not.
Denzel Washington, who also directed, gives us one of the most powerful performances of his career.
“Fences” is a must-see film. It gets an A and is rated PG-13.
Hidden Figures
Starring: Octavia Spencer, Kevin Costner and Taraji P. Henson
Rated PG
In the segregated 1960s, a team of African-American women provide NASA with the mathematical formula needed to put a man into space.
Based on true events, “Hidden Figures” is a wonderfully engaging story about overcoming prejudice and fear. Without being overly preachy and heavy-handed, the film teaches that every human being has gifts which are not exclusive to any race.
“Hidden Figures” is a film well worth the time to see. It gets an A and is rated PG.
