LOS ANGELES, Oct. 4 (UPI) — Tori Spelling was ordered to pay over $38,000 in her ongoing credit card lawsuit last week.
News outlets reported Monday that the 43-year-old actress must pay her past due balance of $37,981.97 to American Express, plus $855 in court costs.
American Express sued Spelling over the debt in January. Court documents showed the actress had last attempted to make a payment in June 2015, but that the $1,070 transaction failed.
Spelling’s mom, Candy Spelling, told TMZ at the time that she was helping the actress financially. The 71-year-old writer claimed she was “paying all [of Tori’s] bills” but not “extras” like the credit card debt.
“I’m not paying any back payments. Just for the house and the kids’ school and the food,” she said. “I don’t know [why she missed payments]. Extravagance, I guess.”
Spelling herself attributed her financial troubles to her privileged upbringing in her 2013 memoir, “Spelling It Like It Is.” The actress is the daughter of Candy Spelling and late producer Aaron Spelling.
“It’s no mystery why I have money problems,” she wrote. “I grew up rich beyond anyone’s dreams. Even when I try to embrace a simpler lifestyle, I can’t seem to let go of my expensive tastes … I can’t afford to live like this anymore.”
Spelling is known for playing Donna Martin on “Beverly Hills, 90210” and has since appeared in a number of TV movies. She and husband Dean McDermott also starred on the Lifetime reality series “True Tori.”
