LOS ANGELES, Oct. 8 (UPI) — The trailer for the upcoming Power Rangers film explores the origin of the alien-fighting superheroes in a toned-down version of the 1990s TV series.

The trailer, which was leaked online ahead of its debut at the New York Comic-Con, follows an outcast group of high school kids who meet in Saturday detention and form a friendship.

They find themselves exploring what appears to be a crash site when they set off a small explosion to try and gain access to the mysterious object.

A few days later, they start to notice changes — increased strength and the ability to jump long distances.

They return to the crash site, and the trailer ends just as Jason, the Red Ranger, is given his suit.

Also making an appearance is Elizabeth Banks as villain Rita Repulsa, Bryan Cranston as Zordon, and Bill Hader as the voice of Alpha 5.

Power Rangers stars Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Becky G, and Ludi Lin and is set to premiere in theaters on March 24, 2017.
