Weekend Box Office: ‘Angry Birds’ Knocks ‘Captain America’ From Top Spot

HOLLYWOOD May 22, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — The battle for box office gold was waged this weekend between the animated film “The Angry Birds Movie” and “Captain America: Civil War.”

And although close, audiences went for the birds, according to Box Office Mojo.

Doing better than predicted, “The Angry Birds Movie” pushed ahead of “Captain America: Civil War,” knocking the Marvel film from the top slot where it had been since it opened May 6.

Based on the popular game app, “The Angry Birds Movie” brought in $39.0 million its first domestic weekend. The film opened internationally last week with $56.5 million. It took in an additional $55.5 million internationally, bringing its worldwide total to $151 million to date.

Dropping to second place, “Captain America: Civil War” brought in an estimated $33.1 million. The Chris Evans/Robert Downey Jr. action film has an estimated domestic total of $347.3 million and a global total of just over $1 billion.

Opening in third place for the weekend is “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising,” starring Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, Chloe Grace Moretz and  Rose Byrne. The comedy sequel took in an estimated $21.7 million.

Debuting in fourth place was Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling’s “The Nice Guys.” The action/comedy brought in $11.2 million its first weekend in release.

Taking in an estimated $11.0 million, Disney’s “The Jungle Book,” starring the vocal talents of Scarlett Johansson, Ben Kingsley, Idris Elba and Bill Murray, dropped to fifth place. The animated film has been in the Top 5 since it opened six weeks ago, and has a global total of $857.6 million.
