HOLLYWOOD, Calif., July 4, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — With three new films opening against it, Disney’s “Finding Dory” remained in the number one slot for a third weekend in a row, according to Box Office Mojo.

The animated juggernaut took in an estimated $49.9 million for the weekend and will most likely add an additional $12 million for Monday. After the four-day holiday, experts are predicting “Finding Dory” will earn a domestic grand total of $380 million and worldwide total of $538 million.

Opening in the number two spot is “The Legend of Tarzan” earning an estimated $38.1 million for its first three days in release. The film starring Alexander Skarsgard and Margot Robbie surprised industry experts by surpassing “The Purge 3,” which was predicted to open stronger.

In third place is “The Purge 3: Election Year,” pulling in an estimated $30.8 million for Friday, Saturday and Sunday and is predicted to end the four-day holiday with a total of $35.2 million Monday night. Box Office Mojo is saying “the franchise is showing zero signs of decay now that it has three films under its belt.”

Debuting in fourth place is “The BFG,” directed by Steven Spielberg in his first-ever Disney film. The film took in an estimated three-day total of $19.5 million and is expected to finish up the Fourth of July weekend with a lackluster $25 million.

Rounding out the top five box office earners is “Independence Day: Resurgence” bringing in an estimated total of $16.5 million its second weekend out. The film has dropped to 60 percent of its opening total and is expected to finish the four-day weekend around $20 million.
