HOLLYWOOD, May 2, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Disney’s animated film “The Jungle Book” dominated the box office for a third week as the family film took in more than $20 million more than all three newcomers combined, according to Box Office Mojo.
“The Jungle Book” sold an estimated $42.4 million of tickets bringing the movie’s total to $252 million domestically.
The film, voiced by Bill Murray, Scarlett Johansson and Idris Elba, has a worldwide total of $684.7 million (estimated).
In a battle for second place, “The Huntsman: Winter’s War,” is retaining its position by a mere $40,000. The film earned an estimated $9.39 million its second weekend in release. The film has a total domestic haul of $33.9 million.
In third place is the comedy cat caper “Keanu,” from comic duo Key and Peele. The film took in an estimated total of $9.35 million, just barely losing out to “The Huntsman: Winter’s War.” Again when the final tallies are locked in, totals could change.
The Garry Marshall comedy “Mother’s Day,” which starred an ensemble cast including Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson and Jason Sudeikis, underperformed, taking in only $8.3 million.
Dropping to fifth place is “Barbershop: The Next Cut” taking in $6.1 million over the weekend. The comedy, starring Ice Cube, Cedric the Entertainer and Anthony Anderson, has earned $44.7 million in its three weeks in release.
